Most common SEO mistakes I see (and how to fix them!)

Let’s start with a brief statement: SEO is required to grow your online presence. Yes, you can use social media to fill the gap, but eventually, your growth will stall if you aren’t investing in SEO. BUT even the best intended strategies can lead to very costly mistakes: time & money.

This week, I’m breaking down the most common SEO mistakes I’ve seen across the different industries I’ve worked with and how you can fix them to start driving growth!

Problem 1: Ignoring technical SEO

Don’t ignore technical SEO. Just don’t do it. I know it can seem daunting and scary. Sometimes it’s just skipped because you want to start seeing traffic growth right away. But you are only as good as your foundation, meaning slow websites, broken links, and missing alt-text, can all be silent killers for your website!

Instead: prioritize this first. Get it out of the way so you can focus on the fun stuff later! Get a site audit to identify and fix these problems ASAP! Google Search Console, Ubersuggest, and other tools are great resources for outlining problems. OR you can purchase an audit from me for $75.

Problem 2: Targeting the wrong keywords

Just because it gets a lot of traffic, does not mean it’s good for your business!! There is such a thing as crappy traffic. Don’t waste your time with keywords that will not resonate with your audience or drive the wrong audience to your site.

Instead: focus on the intent behind the keyword. Think about what your audience needs and what they are asking for before creating the content. Use tools like Semrush, Ubersuggest, or Google Search Console to dig deeper.

Problem 3: Forgetting mobile

Some websites look great on desktop, but are terrible on mobile. Why would you waste the effort?!? No matter what the industry or business, I guarantee your site will be viewed on mobile!

Instead: build with a mobile-first mentality. Make mobile your priority. Test your site on multiple devices. Test multiple breakpoints (view widths). Test. Test. Test. Be sure to use Google’s mobile-friendly guide as well (most modern website builders are mobile first).

Problem 4: Keyword stuffing

It’s not Thanksgiving on your website, okay? No stuffing allowed! Too many people think that more keywords equals more traffic. But that is not the case! Too many keywords make your site appear inhuman and make for a poor user experience!

Instead: write for humans first. If you wouldn’t say it in real life, don’t write it. (or copy and paste it from Ai…) Focus on clear and engaging content. Allow your keywords to flow into your content organically and place them strategically (headers, image names, URL, links, etc)

Problem 5: Forgetting internal linking

This may be something you haven’t heard of and that’s okay. BUT it doesn’t mean you can not do it. Internal linking is when you have one page connected to a relevant page via a link. IF you connect to irrelevant pages or just leave them out, you are hurting your ability to climb the SERPs (search engine results pages)

Instead: add strategic links to relevant pages that have a high authority. The keyword here being relevant. You won’t link a page about basketball to a page about football. You would link football to football cleats. Guide users through your content and help them become the most informed audience. Plus, it helps Google and other search engines know which pages connect and can rank better together!

SEO doesn’t have to be overwhelming or full of trial and error… If you work on fixing these mistakes, you’ll be on your way to unlocking organic growth! That means more traffic and more revenue!

If you’ve been wondering why your SEO isn’t working like you think it should. OR maybe you have zero SEO to begin with, let’s connect. I’m here to help you!
